Stallion Breeding Management Services & Fees

• Breeding Soundness Exams: A stallion evaluation includes two semen collections one hour apart allowing each ejaculate to be evaluated for volume, motility, concentration and total sperm numbers. To assess bacterial growth, bacterial culture samples are taken from the prepuce, urethra and semen following each collection. Morphology slides are also made to assess structural integrity of the sperm cells. Lastly, the stallion's testicles are palpated and evaluated for consistency, conformation, orientation and size. Once all results are gathered, a full report is presented to the stallion owner which provides descriptive details of the findings. The report makes recommendations on breeding procedures and the general suitability of the stallion as a breeding individual
• Training to Phantom: A phantom is an inanimate object that a stallion mounts so semen may be collected by directing the stallion into an artificial vagina. By utilizing this, you eliminate the need for a mare in season. It also reduces the potential for injury and disease transmission inherent in live cover breeding. Most stallions can be trained to use the phantom within a one week period. When adequately trained, stallions retain what they've learned so at any point in the future a phantom can be used without hesitation.
• Complete Semen Analysis and Evaluation: Semen collection for previously phantom trained stallions. Evaluation consists of samples from 1 to 2 ejaculates that are cooled for 24, 48, and if appropriate 72 hours in semen extender with antibiotics. Once there is a firm understanding of semen longevity, then recommendations are made as to the most suitable extender for shipping the semen.
• Cooled and Frozen Semen Processing and Storage: Carefully monitored semen handling and storage. Equine Reproductive Services, L.L.C is a USDA certified frozen semen quarantine facility for Australia, New Zealand and the European Commonwealth.
• Haul-in Semen Collection and Shipments by Appointment: Offered to stallion owners who live within a few hours and prefer to keep their stallion at home.
• Complete Bookkeeping: Keeping accurate, detailed breeding records for the stallion is imperative from season to season to manage him for the best reproductive efficiency.
• Stallion Reports, Genetic Testing: Concise reports are available to the stallion owner at any time. Genetic testing is available upon request.
• Marketing, Advertising and Promotion*: Image is very important these days with so many stallions to choose from. As a stallion owner you may not have the expertise or desire to spend hours marketing your horse. International Stallion Semen Freezing Quarantine

We offer quarantine sessions all year for international semen freezing. Please contact us well in advance to assure stall space is available. Requirements for semen freezing for export are specific to the importing country and generally require at least 30 days of quarantine at the lab and a set of specialized blood tests and cultures. During this time, semen for domestic use can be frozen thus maximizing the stallions time at our breeding center.

Stallion semen freezing for domestic marketing can be frozen anytime of the year. Stallions will produce the greatest numbers of sperm, and therefore the largest number of straws per collection, during late spring and early summer, however most stallions' semen is frozen during the fall and winter due to their show and breeding schedule. We are able to work with your show and breeding schedule to make the best of the time you have available.

Secure Frozen Semen Monitoring, Storage & Distribution

Once your stallion's semen has been frozen for either domestic or international use, you can take advantage of our highly monitored storage or you may use your own storage. In addition to monitored storage our professional staff can also handle all the details of frozen semen distribution and breeding. Mare owners or their veterinarians may contact us directly to arrange frozen semen shipments or we can process shipment requests directly from the stallion owner.

Our staff will provide technical assistance as needed and with proper notice we are able to process the orders so that frozen semen is shipped the same day as the request is received. Each shipment will contain detailed information including post-thaw semen quality and handling and thawing instructions. Our staff is always available to answer any questions you may have.

• Stallion with a book of at least 20 mares paying full farm service fee.
• No Charge for daily care (feeding, grooming and showing to prospective mare owners) does not include veterinary care or farrier fees.
• Resident stallions will be tested for EVA, EIA and CEM at owners expense.

• Stallion with a book of less than 20 mares paying full farm service fee.
• $20.00 per day (feeding, grooming and showing to prospective mare owners) does not include veterinary care or farrier fees.

• Clean out ejaculates - $85.00 per collection
  • Clean out ejaculates usually need to be performed if a stallion has not been collected for more than 1 month.
  • 3 clean out ejaculates are needed.

• Additional expenses to qualify frozen semen for export can be expected
• The number of breeding doses produced from each freeze will vary between stallions and may vary between collections for individual stallions.
• The sperm produced by each stallion determines the number of doses of frozen semen.
• Freezing semen to qualify for export will need to meet specific criteria to be approved by the country it is going to. This may require quarantine & additional lab test.

• The farm service fee of $300.00 includes one next day shipment of semen by ground carrier. Additional shipments are charged at the normal rates as outlined below:
  • Next Day Shipment (Ground Carrier) - $200.00
  • Same Day Shipment via Airline - $400.00
  • Semen picked up at ERS - $150.00

• Excessive time spent phantom training with a stallion will be billed at $100.00 per hour.
